Rex Berry, a native of Moab, starred in football (All-State), baseball, basketball, and track at Carbon High School, and became known as the “Carbon Comet.” He was team captain of every team he played on including the pros.

In 1940 he pitched the Carbon American Legion baseball team to the state championship.

After four years of Navy service in the Pacific during World War II and a year at Carbon Junior College, Rex enrolled at BYU. He concentrated on football, baseball, and track at BYU and was named All-Conference in football in both his junior and senior years. He also won letters in track.

Following graduation in 1951, Rex played professional football with the San Francisco 49ers for six years. He was full-time captain of the San Francisco team and was named all-pro defensive back before his retirement in 1956.

In 1973 he was named to the Utah Sports Hall of Fame.
