Getting to know Anginae Monteverde

Mar 24, 2015 - Posted by Nicholas Henderson at 4:27 pm | Updated: May 12, 2015 2:16 pm | Permalink

Anginae’s career best indoor mark of 4.27m/14-00 is second all-time for a BYU women’s pole vaulter

Major:

Exercise and Wellness

When did you know you were good at track?

It was my junior year. I finally started bending the pole and jumping higher than 10 feet. I ended up jumping 12-2.00 my junior year and coaches started calling me.

How long have you been involved with track and field?

I’ve done track since third grade. I started out sprinting, high jumping and long jumping. High jump didn’t last. I did long jump all the way up until college. I did all the relays. I also got in to hurdles my sophomore year of high school. Hurdles and pole vault were my main events.

Why did you transfer to BYU?

I had a good experience with the people at Oregon. It wasn’t about the coaches, and it wasn’t about the team. It was about lifestyle. I knew I could be happier here. I would go to meets where BYU was at, and I wished I was wearing a BYU uniform. I never thought I would ever think that. There would be moments where I’d see them saying a prayer right before the competition and I would think, ‘oh can I join you guys?’ I really felt like I was missing out on stuff.

Who is one person you’d like to meet?

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland

What is your hobby outside track and field?

I love playing volleyball and anything sports related.

If you could visit anywhere, where would you choose to go?

I’ve always wanted to go to Paris.

What is something few people know about you?

I was a cheerleader for six years.

What is you favorite sport besides pole vaulting?

Volleyball

What is your favorite part of pole vaulting?

Pole vaulting is very exciting and I love how the crowd gets so involved. It’s nothing like any other sport! You don't have to wait to see what the mark is. Either you make the bar or you don't and everyone can get excited right away.

What are your pre-meet rituals?

I listen to certain songs before every meet.

I also do my hair the same every meet. I have two braids. My hair always stays out of my face and it never falls down so it’s perfect.

What is your favorite class taken at BYU?

Positive psychology

Who has had an influence on your athletic career?

My twin sister Alyssa. I look up to her with how competitive she is and how much work she puts into everything she does. No matter what she has been through, she will never give up.

What is your best track memory?

About a month ago when I cleared 14-0.00 for the first time. I went through transferring here from Oregon, which was hard. Then I got injured right away. And I had a rough year trying to get back into it. So, coming into this indoor season and clearing 14-0.00 so fast and qualifying for nationals was very rewarding.

Who is your favorite musical artist?

Rascal Flatts

What is your favorite movie?

Remember the Titans

What is your favorite quote?

"Success isn't how far you go, but the distance you traveled from where you started." -Steve Prefontaine

Advice for other athletes:

“Have fun, enjoy what you’re doing. In the end it’s all about doing ordinary things extraordinary well.”-Vince Gagliardi, Anginae’s high school coach at Clovis West High School

TWITTER TWEET: "Another Colton, Cole Wilstead this time with a 2-out homer past 388 mark in right center for a 2-0 Cougar lead in 2nd." That's what we tweeted after Wilstead followed Colton Shaver with a home run at Utah Valley University earlier this month.  That tweet prompted fellow St. Georgian Dallin Reber to quip to Wilstead, "Hey, Ralph thinks your first name is Colton," to which Wilstead informed him, "It is."  Wilstead chooses to go by the shorter version Cole instead of his official first name Colton, not to be confused with Kolton Mahoney.

LITTLEWOOD BIG LEAGUE: Coach Mike Littlewood's son Marcus was called up last month to the big league squad of the Seattle Mariners, at least for the duration of Spring Training. In addition to bullpen duties as a catcher, he got a stint as a pinch-runner and had one at-bat in another game.  He joined the big league club the week BYU played Nebraska at the Peoria facility.

"HOG HEAVEN": Former BYU coach Glen Tuckett has a rendezvous this week at Spring Training in Arizona with his former players Gary Pullins, Jeff Bills, Dr. Tom Fife, Dennis Lamb (BYU's first baseball All-American) and Larry Romney.  Some of the group will also dine with former Cougars Vance and Adam Law and Jaycob Brugman while in Arizona. Some also got to rub shoulders with Dodger great Tommy LaSorda at a White Sox-Mariner game. The White Sox played the Angels in another game viewed by the former Cougars, who also met with former Major League pitcher Bruce Hurst from St. George.

EAGLE LANDS: James Barker officially became the 11th Eagle Scout on the team last December when he returned home for Christmas vacation.  A delay in his Eagle project made the official presentation occur after his 18th birthday last October.  He earned over 40 merit badges, but that delay did not leave time for official presentation of Eagle Palms.  His Eagle Project was laying brick and mortar for a pad at an elementary school near his home.

THAT'LL LEAVE A MARK: Colton Shaver was twice hit by a pitch in the finale against the University of Hartford in Provo earlier this month. Following the Saturday game when he was asked if the ball left any marks on him.  The muscular Shaver replied, "No, I left some marks on the ball."

MEASURE UP: How tall is Mason Marshall?  He says he is 5-foot-10, having "grown" a couple inches while on his mission to the Philippines (he was listed as 5-foot-8 as a freshman).  Pitching coach Jeremy Thomas stands 5-foot-10 (he was listed as 6-foot-0 as a Cougar senior in 1999) and says he is taller than Marshall and also threw a couple miles per hour faster than the Mantis.

TWITTER TWEET, TOO (TWO): Twitter dialog during the UVU game from former players was interesting.  We tweeted: "Ditto Marshall for the 7th like the 6th after BYU set down in order; 1-3, 1-3, KS x2 for the Mantis; BYU 3-2 top of order."  For a fun dialogue regarding this tweet between former Cougars Ryan Bernal, Adam and Andrew Law and Alex Wolfe, log on to: https://twitter.com/BYUBaseball/status/575475205411201027

Long snapper Matt Foley coming to BYU

Matt Foley, a long snapper out of Temecula Valley High School, has signed an offer of admission to BYU and will join the football program for the 2015 season.

The 6-foot-1, 215-pound native of Temecula, California, is a three-year starter at Temecula Valley HIgh School, where he helped his team advance to the CIF playoffs. A three-time National Camp Series (NCS) camp champion, Foley also earned recognition for his long-snapping talents as one of 12 invitees to the exclusive Rubio Long Snapping Top 12 camp in 2014. In addition to earning three letters in football, Foley has lettered twice in wrestling and once in track and field during his prep career.

Coached by Rick Mey in 2014, Foley was also recruited by Washington, San Diego State and New Mexico.
